The Syrian Orthodox believers under the holy apostolic see of Antioch and all the east living in north London area (especially Heathrow, Wembley, Harrow, Borehamwood,Watford, Hemel Hempstead ,Luton ,Stevenage and Barnet) wanted to do worship and also to retain their spiritual solace desperately needed a church in their region.
The patriarchal vicar His Grace Dr. Geevarghese Mor Coorilos Metropolitan of UK region during the period 2008 -2011 had realised these needs and hence made the fundamental assessment for the scope of a church in north London area.Since the patriarchal vicar had been moved to different spiritual region to do apostolic missions, patriarchal vicar conveyed his wishes to his successor His Grace Mathews Mor Aphrem Metropolitan to start a congregation in north London area.
Hence His Grace Mathews Mor Aphrem Metropolitan had ordered Fr Geevarghese Thandayath to start the congregation in north London and the people unanimously selected the Watford location which is easily commutable from all surrounding areas .Thereafter His Grace Mathews Mor Aphrem Metropolitan approved the congregation in Watford North London.
The first service of the congregation had been celebrated on 29/04/2012 at Trinity Methodist church Whippendell road Watford WD18 7NN .His Grace Mathews Mor Aphrem was chief celebrant and Rev Fr Geevarghese Thandayath ,Rev Fr Jacob Mathew, and Rev Fr Jino Joseph were co-celebrants for the service.The Chief Celebrant had declared the church in the name of Saint Geevarghese Mar Gregorios (alias Parumala Thirumeni) as the patron saint of our church and Fr Geevarghese Thandayath have had appointed as the First Vicar of congregation.
For the convenience and frequent availability of a church to conduct the service , from 27/05/2012 onwards the service had moved to St Michael’s and all angels ,Mildred Avenue ,Watford north London WD18 7DY.
The first management committee came into effect in the general body meeting held on 26/08/2012.
By the grace of God, through the intercession of St. Mary – Mother of God ,all the Apostles, Martyrs, Saints and especially by our patron saint – Saint Geevarghese Mar Gregorios, holy service and all the church spiritual activities have been performing very well and also the congregation had successfully organised several spiritual and religious programs including Feet washing Service (This is the first Feet Wash service event which happened in the history of the UK region).
